Our mission is three-fold:
1) To provide excellent Orton-Gillingham instruction for struggling readers.
2) To advocate and support the Miami community in building a "literacy infrastructure" that:
a) prioritizes Structured Literacy instruction in schools.
b) focuses on school and district-based organizational development and job design, so that teachers are able to provide Structured Literacy instruction.
3) To support parents, teachers, educational administrators, and other community members, by providing information and resources.
The Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach is an explicit, systematic, prescriptive method of teaching. Developed by Dr. Samuel T. Orton (1879-1948) and Miss Anna Gillingham (1878-1963), OG is multi-modal, as instruction incorporates visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile activities to reinforce lessons. OG is appropriate for individual and small group instruction, and ALSO for whole classroom instruction. OG is a Structured Literacy approach informed by the Science of Reading. It is incredibly rewarding to work with each student as they strengthen their reading, spelling and writing skills. In addition, my advocacy work with three non-profit organizations is directed toward bringing Structured Literacy instruction to EVERY STUDENT in EVERY CLASSROOM. Literacy is a basic civil right, and I welcome individuals, schools, businesses, organizations, associations and groups to join our work.
Until Everyone Can Read.
